FULL TASTING NOTE AND WINE MAKING –

Kleine Zalze Vineyard Selection Chardonnay from Stellenbosch has a bouquet of lime and ripe pear which is followed by layers of white peach and hints of vanilla on the palate. The wine has great length and persistent minerality. Crafted from old vine fruit grown in Stellenbosch and Robertson. An elegant and complex Chardonnay with fresh flavours of white peach and the merest hint of toast and butterscotch.
The grapes from the Stellenbosch region came from old vines that contributed to the rich complexity and depth of the wine. The fermentation process was started in stainless steel tanks and transferred halfway through fermentation into oak barrels. A combination of 50% new, 30% second fill and 20% third fill French oak barrels were used. No malolactic fermentation was allowed, to preserve the natural acidity, and the wine was left on the lees, in barrel, for 8 months.

THE PRODUCER –

Kleine Zalze is a family owned winery situated in the heart of the Cape Winelands. Winemaking has taken place there on a small scale since 1695 but it was in 1996, when Kobus Basson and his family purchased the property, that the modern Kleine Zalze was born. In 1996 the estate’s soils were scientifically mapped, evaluated and replanted according to their specific terroir characteristics and potential. Continuous investment over more than 20 years has seen the winery evolve into one of the most awarded in Stellenbosch.
Kleine Zalze wines are marked by classical structure and complexity matched by a vibrant flavour intensity. Discernibly South African in style, they are refreshing, beautifully balanced and well suited to food. They are made according to traditional methods, with minimal cellar intervention but supported by modern winemaking equipment.
